2017 Year 8 Kiwi Whistler Programme

Due to a fantastic response we're thrilled to announce the twelve spaces to become a Kiwi Whistler have now been filled, and we are therefore no longer accepting applications.

Applications for the 2017 Kiwi Whistler Programme have now closed.

If you love netball ... are keen to umpire and extend your skills ... then learn to be a netball umpire!

The Kiwi Whistler Programme is for Year 8 netball players who are training to become umpires.  This is the fifth year Motu Kairangi will be running this special programme.  The course has two parts - 5 theory and 6 practical sessions.

A limit of 12 Kiwi Whistlers may be on the programme so you must register to secure a place.

It is free!

Course begins Friday 5 May 2017 at 3:30pm.

Registrations close on Thursday 13th April 2017.

Prerequisites

  • Be in Year 8 and interested in umpiring netball.
  • Committed to attend ALL theory and practical sessions.
  • Have an adult mentor who is a MK registered umpire or has been approved by MK.  They must attend ALL practical games with you.
  • Have a good quality whistle, hair tie, loud voice and positive can-do attitude (bring pen & paper).

Theory

The x5 weekly theory sessions will be held on Fridays for 1.5 hours at the ASB Sports Arena in Kilbirnie, and are run by Sue Geale from Netball Wellington Centre.

The weekly sessions will be on Fridays from 3:30 - 5:00pm from 5 May to 9 June 2017 (please note there is no theory session on Friday 2 June due to it being Queens Birthday Weekend).

Your availability will determine whether the theory section will be held either on Fridays at 3:30pm or Saturday mornings.  Please indicate which option suits you.

Practical

The practical sessions are completed during MK’s Saturday Grading/Competition Game Rounds for x6 weeks in Terms 2 and 3.

Kiwi Whistlers will be assigned to umpire games in the Y6 grade by the Kiwi Whistler Coordinator (replacing one or both school umpires for the day).

Year 6 teams play at approximately 10:40am, 11:30am, 12:20pm, or 1:10pm on a Saturday morning.

Mentors

Each Kiwi Whistler needs to have a Mentor who attends games during their practical training to provide support and feedback.

Your Mentor must be an MK registered umpire or approved by MK.

Mentors must commit to the full 6 weeks of practical training and should attend the first theory session with you.

Kiwi Whistler Programme

The Kiwi Whistler Programme is for Year 8 netball players who are training to become umpires.  A limit of 12 Kiwi Whistlers may be on the programme in each session.

The course is x11 weeks and comprises of x5 theory and x6 practical sessions. Kiwi Whistlers fulfil the practical component of their training during MK Netball's Saturday grading/competition game rounds in Terms 2 and 3.

Kiwi Whistlers must be committed to attending all theory and mentored games.  Each Kiwi Whistler needs to have a Mentor who attends games during their practical training to provide support and feedback.  The Mentor must be a MK registered umpire or approved by MK.  Mentors must commit to the full six weeks of practical training and are welcome to attend the theory sessions with the Kiwi Whister.  If a potential Kiwi Whistler is struggling to find a mentor they should contact MK ASAP.

Kiwi Whistlers will be assigned to umpire games in the Year 6 grade by the MK Training and Development Coordinator (replacing one or both schools umpires for the day).

If a Kiwi Whistler has been assigned to referee your game, your school delegate will be notified by email and the roster is posted on the MK website each week.  Please support our Kiwi Whistlers by being courteous and supportive of their commitment to train as umpires.

Kiwi Whistlers and their Mentors should be there in ample time to introduce themselves and carry out all pre-game checks.  As there are only 12 accepted each year, those accepted must be committed to the course.

If a Kiwi Whistler cannot attend a game, they must advise the MK Training and Development Coordinator as soon as they are aware (7 days unless emergency) and their reasons will be reviewed by the MK Training and Development Coordinator.  Rosters of who they are umpiring are posted on the MK website weekly and games will be around the same time each week.  If they do not attend without advising in advance (7 days unless emergency) of absence they may not qualify or may be dismissed from the course.  The circumstances will be reviewed by the committee who will decide if they are able to continue the course.

There is a list of requirements to acheive in order to graduate from the course.  For further information please email the Kiwi Whistler Coordinator: mktrainingnetball@gmail.com
